In the times before the Meiji era, before the Shogunate, and back further still, Japan existed in a state of pure chaos.
There was no form of government, and everyone fought for themselves, or the small towns and cities they lived in. There lived
many odd and strange races, and often these races fought with one another. From the mysterious ratlike race, Nezumi, to the
cold and mysterious shifters many wonderous and horrifying beasts inhabited the world.
However, the biggest conflict that tore the land apart was the spreading of the tainted. These terrible creatures
existed in the shadows of Japan, and slowly consume all light as they spread out to the once peaceful areas. It was mainly
the humans that fought against the tainted, but over time many battles were lost and it seemed hope had all but failed. However,
the era will change yet again with the coming of a strange young man who claims to be a spirit not of this world, and the
forming of a bond between him and several others that will ultimatley rule the fate of the entire country.
Rei - Appearing seemingly out of nowhere blind and naked under a tree one fateful afternoon, the story and
mission Rei tells is less then convincing. However it is soon revealed that he might be telling the truth as Yumi and the
others are cast deeper into his dark story. Because of the un natural bright lights of the upper plane where he comes from
Rei can barely see during the day, let alone at night. He looks to Yumi for guidance and help on his bizarre mission and eventually
comes close to being destroyed completely by his other half, Reii. In his reborn form he has more similarities to humans then
in his other form and chooses, to fight physically, losing all memories except those of Yumi...
Yumi - This girl was less than thrilled to meet Rei and help him along his journey, at first that is. She
may seem like a harsh and cold female, but that isn't without reason. Her entire village was destoryed by raiders and she
took this very hard, never allowing herself to show any emotion from that day. The only reason why she accompanied Rei and
the others was because the head monk at the Taikido Temple, the places where she grew up, asked her to do so, but one Makura
became aware of her, he persued her relentlessly, testing her and eventually causing her to break down her emotionless barrier,
learning to love her friends and Rei. She also became Karite's bearer, holding a special place in her heart for Yamashi..
Gitou - A guardian of a remote mountain shrine, Gitou was thrust into the adventure after witnessing Rei
close a portal to the lower plane in the very shrine he was supposed to protect. Although a holy samurai, Gitou's mood changes
very often and is displayed through his constantly changing hair color. At times Gitou may act very honorble and noble, whilst
other times he is caught peaking at the Priestess Namaruki, whom he eventually marries. Gitou takes Renu under him as a student
and hopes to one day pass on his most powerful technique, the Holy Iajutsu Focus to her.
Hikome - A young orphan girl came into this story by chance, only aiding Yumi, rei, and Gitou one night
when they needed a place to rest. She quickly grew attached to Gitou, and he did the same to her, taking her in as his little
sister after she discovered her love for him was not as she thought.. Hikome is the only non-fighter of the group, often making
it harder for the others to battle and make sure she is safe; this is where Suterusu comes in. He took to protecting her as
well as caring for her.
Karite/Yamashi - While technically the same being, Karite and Yamashi are also very different. Hundreds
of years ago the adventurer Yamashi was cursed for leaving his loved ones behind too often and was forced to live as a sword
for the rest of eternity, being allowed to turn human only during a full moon. This powerful sword was named Karite. Karite
represents all of Yamashi's dishonorment and sadness, while Yamashi is his true form. Eventually he is allowed repentence
for his actions when his love Noriko is ressurected and brought back to him.
Namaruki - Perhaps the most tradic of the group, Namaruki is a beautiful Priestess, dedicating her life
to helping others and riding the nearby villages of Tainted. She does her best to not let anyone get very close to her emotionally,
due to her life threatening illness she was born with, she knows she does not have a long and full life to live, and this
is the main reason why she pushes Gitou away for much of the journey. Yet in the end, she gives in to her love for him and
becomes his wife, letting go of most of her Priestess duties.
Suterusu - A lone shinobi who gets off as being nothing but a boyish pervert actually has a much deeper
side to him. With his crushed enthusiasim and ego that was taken from him when he was only a child, he swore to be alone for
the rest of his life. He is used by Makura at one point to spy on Yumi and the rest and eventually quits when he sees Hikome,
whom is the reason why he joins the group. In time he comes to terms with his past and dedicates everything to protecting
Hikome and the others.
Kozue - what can be said about her but that she's crazy and loud, yet still completely sexy; Kozue is the
last of her kind, a race of strong lizard people that seemingly wiped themselves out in territory wars. She isn't the brightest
creature to speak with, claiming to understand all of Souryo's um.. proverbs, but when she gets the chance to fight, not many
cant best her. Kozue is able to form a thick layer of scaled armor all over her body, her tail has a highly poisonous tip
with incurable vemon.. but that doesn't seem to bother Souryo at all... he just keeps on grabbing it to get a rise out of
her.
Souryo - What can be said about Souryo except that he is one of the oddest monks that walks the face of
the earth. Not only is he a pervert but he insists on making "wise" statements constantly much to Gitou's dismay. Although
he claims he is only "walking the same path" as the others in reality he wishes only to help all he can with his strong anti
tainted and undead spells. Souryo falls head over heels for Kozue, the only one in the group who pretended to understand
his strange sayings.
Renu - Coming into the story as the last to join the group, Renu thought of herself as the greatest swordswoman
around, thinking no man could out do her in a fight. But this was quickly proved wrong when Gitou showed that he truely was
better with his holy technique. This did not sit well with her, and she demanded to become his student in hopes of learning
this attack and becoming stronger. Renu enjoyed being alone most of the time, but formed a deep bond with the mysterous fisherman,
Kaijin; the only member that she could really talk to.
Kaijin - The watcher of the ancient forest of Takeshi and keeper of the lost souls and spirits that live
there Kaijin is a man bound and determined to do one thing only... catch a damn fish! He spends most of his time fishing with
the woman he falls deeply in love with, Renu to no avail. He leaves his forest in search of destroying Makura as he is the
one who is sucking the spirits from his forest. His simple looking fishing pole however may be more then meets the eye...
Noriko - Not playing a very extensive role in this story, Noriko is nothing more than Yamashi's wife who
died many years ago, never knowing what happened to her adventuring husband who was turned into a sword. Later on, however,
she was brought back to life after Yamashi repented of his ways, not longer having to be the wisecracking blade of Karite.
Reii - The true enemy behind the makings of everything, Reii was the one that set up everything perfectly
as if it were a game to achieve his goals. He seems not to care about anyone, nor care about killing innocent people like
Makura and the rest do. He cares only to create the perfect being which he says will bring about a change like no other to
the world,one that will most likely lead to destruction. He will not hesitate to destroy anyone that crosses his path, especially
Rei.
Makura - A spirit from the lower planes Makura comes to the middle plane to feast on the fears and doubts
of everyone that dwells there. The tainted are the result of his feasting, creatures that live only to kill and spread more
misery for him to devour. He uses his strange powers to enslave Mihoshi and potentially Yumi, whom he desires greatly. But
why...?
Mihoshi - Mihoshi was a normal woman, or so it seemed until Makura made her his loyal, mindless minion.
It appeared she was in love with him, doing his every bidding, and becoming incredibly jealous if she showed signs of having
interesting in another female, mainly Yumi. She had outstanging dark powers, using them at will to keep her master safe and
hers..
Kurayami - A being that consists of nothing but pure and intense evil energy who is sought out by Makura.
Kurayami enjoys nothing more then seeing, hearing, and tasting the suffering of others. The very essence of his being depends
on it, and seems to know Yumi from somewhere...
Kumitama - To describe Kumitama in one word, it would most definately be sinister; because that is
what she truely is. She only seeks to destory and be at the side of the most powerful destroyer. She has a strange serpent
marking all over her body, which appears to shift at times, having the ability to absorb any and all attacks and shoot them
back at the opponent, all, that is, except holy attacks. She has an odd pet bird named Chio, that she uses to spy on
Yumi and the others, seeing through his eyes and reporting their activities to Reii.
